Now For Our Favourites
With the mundane and the practical out the way, it is time to scan through the wonderful world of stationery to find those bits that could revolutionise your office. There are pens and pencils, and there is everyday paper. However, until you experience the wonder of some of the choices out there, you have yet to enjoy pure stationery pleasure.
The Humble HB Pencil
So much great work is achieved when creativity is freed up. The best thing about an HB pencil is that we used them as children to scribble out the best stories ever or create a masterpiece of art without thought. Go back to a pencil, and the muscle memory kicks in. Your brain remembers that this is where you are free to do whatever you like – because you have an eraser and anything stupid can be obliterated out of existence.
Don't believe us. Try it. Holding an HB pencil feels magical, especially when it is freshly sharpened, and the end flakes a little on the page.
The Electric Pencil Sharpener
To increase the pleasure of the pencil, you need an electric pencil sharpener. Do you remember in primary school when your teacher had one on the edge of the desk? You would write and write in the hope you could queue up and whizz your pencil with a shushhhhhh. The metal pencil sharpeners are effective, they work well. However, nothing beats the stress-relief that comes from an electric pencil sharpener!
The Yellow-Paged Memo Pad
Ok, if you have pencils, then you will need paper to write on. You don't want to use the printer paper because this feels too formal for initial ideas. You also want the freedom to scrunch up that page and aim at the bin. A white A4 memo pad will do the job, don't get us wrong. You can scribble out ideas then rip off the top page – leaving the next page for the next set of ideas.
So, why yellow?
First, white paper glares and can cause headaches if you stare at it for too long.
Second, all the best cop and legal shows in the past had people taking notes on yellow memo pads, and it just looks cool. You feel like a proper writer with a yellow memo pad. It invites you to create.
Sticky Flag Tags
There are particular inventions out there that are genius. The person that first twisted that bit of metal to make a paper clip deserved a promotion, right? Well, the same should be true of the sticky flag tag inventor. The person that knew you need a thin slip of paper or film, preferably in the shape of an arrow, that could go on the edge of the paper to point the third party to the exact spot they need. Not only did they know it needed to stick to the page at the precise spot but that it would need to be peeled away without damaging the document. Wow.
We really like the sticky paper flags because you can write on them too. You can add a little message about what needs to happen at this point in the document. We have also been known to create our very own coded system for different coloured sticky flag tags. This is stationery heaven.
Gel Ink Roller Ball Pens with a Rubber Grip
A good pen should sit in your hand and feel like an extension of your arm. It should feel substantial without feeling unnecessarily burdensome. When you click the end, it should make a satisfying chunk. There should be no lid to use, retractable only. When the nib hits the page, it should glide, with no friction. The ink should be released evenly, with no heavy splodges, and worse, moments of no ink. There should be a rubber grip that is tactile and forms a protective layer between you and the pen.
We secretly still yearn for that pen from when we were young where you could choose to write in black, blue, red, green and even purple. You could select which clicker to press down, and like magic, your ink colour changed. We realise your accounts department might find the purchase of these pens patronising, but your creatives might just fall in love with you when they turn up in the stationery cupboard.
Stick with us. We realise it sounds like we have headed back to the 19th century and soon we will be suggesting the best candle holders. However, in a world where mental wellbeing is a pressing problem, natural light is an excellent solution. The large strip lighting in your office, the one that creates that artificial glow day in, day out, could be part of the problem.
A lack of access to natural light impacts on our circadian rhythm and the constant low-level flashing is a continual stimulus to our brains, which makes it challenging to destress. Therefore, switching off the overhead lights and giving the professional control with a desk lamp could do wonders for your office environment. The best desk lights allow you to adjust the intensity of light, depending on the activity. Some have a timer that switches them off after a set period. This could save you a lot on your utility bills too.
The worst thing we can do for our posture is to use a laptop on our lap. It is also not great to work at a desk with a laptop either. You scrunch your shoulders in and slump in your chair. Your wrists will be angled downwards the whole time, and you will not be prompted to look away from the screen to focus on a distant object, as you should from time to time. In short, a laptop is a health and safety nightmare.
Buying a laptop stand not only prevents your computer from being bumped onto the floor and damaged, but it also saves your body from the excesses of too much computer work. You can now get laptop stands that can fold up with your laptop and move around with you too. The newest designs are sleek and portable and ergonomically so much friendlier.
Antibacterial Wipes and Tissues
This suggestion may have revealed our OCD levels just a little. However, be honest, most offices are festering pits of bacteria. You must have watched Bob from IT wipe his nose on his hand just before tapping away on your keyboard for half an hour. A handy box of tissues to prompt hygienic clearing of nasal passages – and the antibacterial wipes should a swift cleaning of IT equipment be necessary - are a stationery store must.
This sounds like something we would say as a joke, and in some ways, we have been light-hearted. However, the passing of bugs in an enclosed space can be a real issue for sickness levels. The passing of colds and sickness amongst your employees could cause a genuine concern for HR and department heads. Therefore, encourage cleanliness with wipes and tissues could be a real bonus to your staffing levels.
Whiteboard and Coloured Dry Wipe Pens
Then, if you want people to tell you when you need to restock your stationery cupboard, get yourself a whiteboard and some dry wipe pens. You can create a system where a red pen suggests an emergency buy and a black pen suggests you should restock soon.
A whiteboard is also an excellent means of passing incidental messages around an office and encouraging idea-sharing. It is also a place where you can have some fun… and wipe it away before the boss arrives.
As our guide to the stationery cupboards tells you, your wholesale stationery order is more than just topping up the paper clips. With a hint of imagination and a flashback to your childhood obsessions, you can make your office life a lot more creative and fun. You just have to give yourself permission to buy those pineapple-shaped smelly erasers – surely it is worth it for the smile?
